In the law of attraction community there is a lot of focus on positive thinking. Think positively, and you’re told that everything will work out for you.
And there’s a lot of truth to this, of course. The world will reflect back to you what you are predominantly holding.
But it is often misapplied. People who try to follow this advice often become afraid of their negative emotions, and so push them down or simply ignore them. They’re afraid that if they admit to their negative emotions, they will attract negative things into their life.
And so there’s a fear of negativity — an all-out war on it. We have to avoid negative thinking at all costs.
But that’s simply not true. Actually, ignoring your negative emotions will just make them even more powerful. Repressing your negative emotions has the potential to cause them to manifest in bigger and bigger ways in your outer reality.
See, there is one thing that is left out of the advice to think positively. What people don’t realize is that you don’t have to really try to think positively. Once you’ve dealt with your negative emotions and have returned to a place of stillness, positivity is your natural state. You can’t help but to think positively — to be positive — when there is nothing else dragging you down.
It doesn’t need to be an affectation. You don’t need to pretend that everything is OK when it clearly isn’t. You don’t need to force yourself to think positively when the negative is staring you in the face.
The first step is to admit where you are. Admit to yourself how you feel: things maybe seem pretty awful right now, and that’s OK. Even just the relief in admitting to yourself that you really aren’t feeling great, is enough to release it and let it go.
Especially in financial matters, negative emotions can be quite powerful. Perhaps you fear not having enough money, or you’re afraid of your business not working out. Perhaps you hate your current job and can’t stand the thought of going back. Maybe you’re just frustrated that things aren’t moving faster than they are.
All of these emotions are valid. You must admit to yourself how you feel in this moment, no matter how negative it is.
This process works, too, of course, even for mildly negative emotions. Even if things are generally going well, but you just feel discontent or impatient, it’s still important to make room for those negative emotions just as much as for the extremely powerful ones.
After you’ve accepted where you are, you need to give it space. Be truly, completely OK with feeling that way right now, without trying to change it. Breathe through it; sit with it; give it the space it needs.
You have to make this a priority. It’s easy to think of a million other things you could be doing. It might seem like a waste of time to sit and feel how you feel. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
To sit in complete acceptance of how you feel is the key to your freedom. It’s the fastest, easiest way to unlock your happiness and joy.
But not only that. Your repressed negative emotions are keeping you stuck, because the law of attraction is responding to them, causing your outer reality to reflect your deepest darkness. When you set them free by completely, 100% accepting and allowing them, they are released and now the LOA will start bringing you very different results.
As you make space for your repressed emotions to come up to the surface, they may actually get stronger for a time. That is OK and to be expected. You’ve repressed them so much that you likely didn’t even know how strong they were. Whatever comes up, simply accept and allow it fully.
If you notice your body clenching around those negative emotions, consciously relax your muscles in any place you feel tension. Our body reacts adversely to negativity because, well, it’s unpleasant. But it’s hard to be accepting while you are simultaneously holding physical tension. Consciously and deliberately relaxing can also help those emotions to clear out more quickly.
If it gets especially difficult, also remember your breath. That will keep you grounded in the present moment.
In time you will feel a lightening of your emotions. It will get easier to relax. The intensity will subside, and you may feel a sense of relief. You might unconsciously take a deep breath. All of these are signs that you have released your negativity.
Continue to relax, breathe, and make space for whatever comes up. Very likely, you will settle into a natural sense of peace and stillness. This means your job is done for now.
It’s so vitally important that you make time for this process of inner acceptance regularly. If you are attempting to improve your financial situation from a place of holding a lot of repressed negativity, you will just spin your wheels — or even keep adding on stress to your already stressed system.
Life is meant to be effortless. But the only way to experience that is to stop resisting the flow of life — part of which includes your negative thoughts and emotions.
When you can be totally open and allowing to everything that arises, you will reawaken your inner guidance that will reveal the best path to your desires.
